When transporting your pet between the UK and France, choosing the right mode of travel is crucial for their comfort and safety. The two primary options are the Eurotunnel LeShuttle and ferry services. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, which we'll explore to help you make an informed decision.

Eurotunnel LeShuttle: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  1. Speed – The Eurotunnel offers a swift 35-minute crossing between Folkestone and Calais, making it the fastest option available.

  2. Stay with Your Pet – You remain in your vehicle with your pet during the journey, reducing stress and ensuring their comfort throughout the trip.

  3. Frequent Departures – LeShuttle operates up to four crossings per hour, providing flexibility in scheduling your travel.

  4. Weather Resilience – The tunnel is less susceptible to weather disruptions compared to ferry services, offering a more reliable schedule.

Cons:

  1. Cost – Traveling via the Eurotunnel can be more expensive than ferry options.

  2. Limited Onboard Facilities – Unlike ferries, the Eurotunnel doesn't offer amenities such as outside area, dog walking or dining areas during the crossing.

Ferry Services: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  1. Cost-Effective – Ferry crossings are often more affordable, with some routes offering pet-friendly lounges for a small additional fee.

  2. Onboard Amenities – Ferries provide facilities like restrooms, dining options, and designated pet areas, allowing for a more comfortable experience during the journey.

  3. Scenic Experience – The ferry journey offers panoramic sea views and the opportunity to be on deck, which can be enjoyable for both you and your pet.

Cons:

  1. Longer Crossing Time – Ferry journeys typically take around 90 minutes, which is longer than the Eurotunnel crossing.

  2. Pet Separation Policies – Depending on the ferry operator, you might be required to leave your pet in the vehicle or a designated kennel during the crossing, which could cause anxiety for some animals.

  3. Less Frequent Departures – Ferry services usually have fewer daily crossings compared to the Eurotunnel, potentially limiting your scheduling options.

Additional Considerations

  • Booking in Advance – Regardless of your chosen mode of transport, it's advisable to book ahead, especially during peak travel seasons, to secure a spot for you and your pet.

  • Pet Documentation – Ensure your pet has the necessary vaccinations, microchip, and a valid pet passport or health certificate for travel between the UK and France.

  • Comfort During Travel – Bring familiar items like your pet’s favorite blanket or toy to help them feel secure during the journey.

Personal Experience From a Pet Transporter

Taking into account the fact we cross the border 30-40 times per year, here is our personal thoughts on which crossing is we prefer to use;

The ferry enables us transporters to bring more pets onboard, and it offers a pet lounge premium ticket. This ticket allows us to take any dogs we are transporting into a dog-friendly area, which includes a feeding area, cleaning station, and a secure facility where you can stay with your dog throughout the journey.

(TIP: Booking with P&O Ferries provides free tea, coffee, and cold drinks in the pet lounge!)

LeShuttle is a highly favored route for us because of its convenience. Trains typically run every 45-60 minutes, and although the restrooms aren't the best, they are available. You can leave your vehicle to check on your pets. The crossing itself takes about 35-40 minutes. While the ferry is comfortable, boarding often faces delays. Based on Pet Taxi Ltd's personal experience, we recommend LeShuttle for its speed.

After all, the less time your pets spend in our vehicle, the more time they have with their owners!
